Alaska Sets to Ban Gold Mining Project in Bristol Bay to Protect Wildlife

Alaska is set to place a ban on gold mining activities in Bristol Bay if Alaskans cast their votes next week in favour of the ban which supporters of the ban claim will offer protection to the salmons and other wildlife that naturally inhabits the bay.

This gold mining project is the brain child of The Pebble Partnership comprising of Northern Dynasty Minerals and Anglo American. Experts estimated that the Bristol Bay gold mining project is capable of providing jobs for thousands of people in a bid to extract more than 107 million ounces of gold, 80 billion pounds of copper and other precious metals from a site with an area of about 150 square miles.

Opponents of this gold mining project who are mostly environmental groups and other critics claim the mining project will endanger wildlife that inhabits this proposed mining site and fear that tons of toxic waste could be deposited in Bristol Bay watershed by the mining activities if allowed to go on. This proposed mining site located in the southwest Alaska is home to salmon fish, grizzly bears, moose, seals, caribou, and some migratory birds.

In fact, a large proportion of the salmons harvested worldwide are said to come from this bay according to a report but the bay is also said to be a major concentration of precious metals like gold, silver, copper, and molybdenum which is commonly mixed with steel to build up tough resistance against the effect of heat.
